S 1785

Struve 1785 is another attractive rapid binary with an orbit of 155 years. The 2000 PA is 173º with a fairly wide separation of 3.3".

The two stars are nearly the same brightness: 7.7, 8.2 (combining to form a visual magnitude of 7.1). They are only 44.5 light years away.

To find the binary, start at Arcturus. With Arcturus at the bottom of your glasses you'll see a 4.8 magnitude star at the top. This is 12 Boo.

Put 12 Boo at the eastern edge of your glasses. Struve 1785 now comes into view: binoculars. It's situated midway between two brighter stars, 3 Boo (6.0) and 9 Boo (5.0).
