Pyxis, "The Compass", is one of Nicolas Louis de Lacaille's creations. He called it "Pyxis Nautica" (The Nautical Box, or Mariner's Compass).

The constellation's Bayer stars range from third to fifth magnitude.


Double stars:

Zeta Pyxidis is a wide binary with faint companion: 4.9, 10; PA 61º, separation 52.3".

Epsilon Pyx is a fairly wide binary also with a rather faint companion: 5.6, 9.5; PA 147º, separation 17.8".

Kappa Pyx: 4.6, 10; PA 262º, separation 2.1".
