NGC 2070

NGC 2070 is called the Tarantula Nebula for its unique shape. Seen with the naked eye, it looks like a star out of focus. In fact, it encircles a cluster of stars which goes by the name of 30 Doradus.

It's the largest diffuse nebula known and while well-seen in binoculars a medium to large telescope brings out the delicate filaments of the edges: binoculars.

The Large Magellanic Cloud, in which the Tarantula Nebula is found, is a vast galaxy seen with the naked eye containing millions of stars, thousands of supergiants, and hundreds of planetary nebulae. Altogether the galaxy is thought to contain around 25 billion solar masses.
