M38 (NGC 1912)

M38 (NGC 1912) is the western-most star cluster of the three Messier objects found in Auriga, nearly due north of beta Tauri.

Starting at El Nath, place this star at the lower edge of your viewing field. Move north, putting El Nath just out of your viewing and you'll see a group of stars at the top: binoculars.

Now move these stars to the bottom of your field of vision and M38 will be just north of centre: binocular.

M38 has about a hundred stars, loosely scattered. The cluster is about 60-70 million years old, young enough to still have its share of bright luminous stars.
