γ Leporis

Gamma Leporis is perhaps the finest binary in Lepus; a rare naked-eye double (in a perfect night sky) with a delightful colour contrast, yellow and reddish-orange (although individual observers often disagree):
      3.6, 6.3; 350, 95".

The pair are 29.2 light years away, and the period of the companion's orbit has been estimated at over 18,000 years.

Gamma Leporis had been chosen as one of the top ten target stars for NASA's Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) program, in hopes of finding a habitable planet encircling the star. The program had difficulties getting the necessary funding and was finally cancelled in 2011.
